USW: Tip the World Over on Its Side
John Whiteside Parsons, born Marvel Whiteside Parsons but better known as Jack Parsons, was one of the primary founders of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and a pioneer of solid-state rocketry, as well as a practicing occultist. He was a practicing Thelemite and a correspondent of Aleister Crowley. In the mid- to late-forties, he and L. Ron Hubbard engaged in a series of magickal workings called the Babalon Working, designed to incarnate the goddess Babalon on earth à la Crowley’s Moonchild. He claims it worked, although in the aftermath, L. Ron Hubbard and his ex-lover stole his life’s savings and he couldn’t find work in the McCarthy era. He died in 1952 at the age of 37, in a home laboratory explosion that some consider suspicious.
